Farmers Markets—Buy Local, Support our Farmers!
Living in Wisconsin we are very lucky that we have 4 seasons—though some people may not be happy on the bitter cold winter days, or on some of the hot and sticky summer days! These seasons do however give us some of the best growing weather for agriculture, and therefore, allows us to have fresh locally grown food at our fingertips.
Farmers Markets have some of the freshest grown food, often picked that same day, that many people don’t take advantage of. Purchasing locally grown food at farmers markets allows for numerous benefits, both for your health, and for the economy!
Produce purchased at farmers markets usually have more nutrients, since it was allowed to ripen in the fields and not in a warehouse. Grocery stores often purchase produce that has been picked prior to its full ripeness, and allows it to sit in order to ripen. Produce from farmers markets also seem to have a more fulfilling taste— this is due to the higher abundance in nutrients in the produce! Foods featured at farmers markets are foods that are seasonal—or ready for harvesting at that time! Variety is also higher at farmers markets (only seasonal availability)—where you may even be able to find purple or yellow carrots!!
Produce from farmers markets usually has minimal pesticides, if any! However, each farmer has their own way of farming, so it may be beneficial to ask about their specific farming practices!
Purchasing local foods also helps give back to your community, and therefore help support the local economy. Purchasing directly from farmers at the markets allows for cheaper produce for you, and a better return for the farmer!
Some of my favorite things about farmers markets are being able to connect to the community, supporting local, knowing where your food comes from, and better yet—getting different meal ideas and recipes from the farmers! Here is a list of some farmers markets around the area—be sure to check out your local farmers market!
