As small business owners, we plan for everything! We’ve been putting all of our time and energy into the business for the past 4 years, which was our first “baby”.

As the business has been going well, we decided the time was right to expand our family! Going into this took a lot of preparation, not only mentally but physically as well.

Starting a family has always been on our “to do” list, but when was the perfect time? As many people tell you, there is no “perfect” time to completely change your lives (for the better we think)! But it does take a little preparation.

About 2 years ago, we decided we were going to wait a little longer, but I wanted to start preparing my body to be a home for this baby. In order to best prepare my self, I started with making sure I was the healthiest I could be. We’ve always ate fairly clean so I didn’t have to make many changes there, and luckily I’ve been active through out my life so I knew I wanted to maintain an active lifestyle.

The first thing I did was I performed a micronutrient test that showed my nutrient levels and gave me areas that I needed to increase and other areas that I needed to maintain. I wanted to have enough nutrients in my body to grow and feed a baby for 9 months in utero, as well as enough supply to breastfeed for months after delivery.

I was low on a few nutrients, but had information to change that. I was low in my B vitamins (B1 and B3), biotin and Glutamine, and was hovering over the borderline low-normal levels in Pantothenate and Choline and Cysteine. With these results I was able to change a few of my supplements to increase in these areas, but maintain my other levels.

I started on a Prenatal vitamin (Metagenics Wellness Essentials- Pregnancy) which is available on our Wellevate platform.  This prenatal vitamin is not only a prenatal vitamin, but it is an easy grab and go packet with Omega-3s, EPA and DHA (from better sources than you find in most supplements), Choline and a Calcium/Magnesium tablet. For a few months I added an extra B vitamin into my diet to make sure I was increasing the amount of B1 and B3.

As for dietary changes—I added foods that were higher in the nutrients that I was low on.

Foods high in Thiamin (B1) are Rice Bran, Pork, Legumes, Nutritional Yeasts, Wheat Germ and Enriched Grains.  For me, I am gluten free and try to not consume too many grains, So I chose to increase the amount of pork and legumes! Dietary sources of Niacin (B3) are very similar to that of Thiamin as mentioned above, but also included potatoes and other meats, so we made sure we were eating those in our diets as well!

Biotin was something that I made the most changes for! Egg Yolks and liver are high in biotin, so I started eating eggs every morning for breakfast! I tried liver, but it didn’t set to well, so I found a liver supplement from Vital Proteins that I added to my diet in order to increase these nutrients but not necessarily need to make liver each week. J

After making these changes for close to a year I re-took my micronutrient test and showed great results. I knew that I needed to maintain this nutrient level if I wanted to have the healthiest pregnancy possible.

With that being said, its never to early (or too late for that matter) to prepare for pregnancy, and there are multiple tests that we can run to determine your health status as well as your micronutrient levels, like the one I discussed above.
