Kinesiology Tape for Your Aches and Pains

Kinesiology Taping for Pregnancy Support

At Wisconsin Family and Sports Chiropractic, we strive to use multiple types of therapies in order to give you the most comprehensive care possible. One of these therapies that we use often is kinesiology taping, which utilizes a special stretchy elastic tape to provide a therapeutic benefit. It is different from stiff athletic tape, which is used to hold joints and muscles in one position, because it will expand and contract with the movement of the body. After we perform all other treatments, we often use kinesiology tape as a final step to keep you feeling great days after your treatment! Also, check out Dr. Kenzie's video on how she tapes for pregnancy support here.

How Does Kinesiology Tape Work?

Most of the benefits that you will see from kinesiology tape comes directly from its elastic properties. Once adhered to the surface of the skin, the tape will contract and lift the skin slightly which will allow for increased absorption of lymphatic fluid. This will help decrease bruising and inflammation that you often see after an injury. The tape will also help to decrease some pain in the area by stimulating the surrounding tissue and essentially “turning off” the pain signals. Think of it like how when you stub your toe or bump your head, it feels better when you rub it. The tape works in a similar way, but staying on the skin so the effect lasts longer!

One of the best parts about kinesiology tape is that it is designed to stay on for an average of 3-5 days, providing a therapeutic benefit the entire time. It is also designed for movement and daily activities, so you can exercise and shower with it on and don’t have to worry about it falling off. A majority of the tape sold today is also hypoallergenic and has a special heat activated adhesive that forms a strong bond to your skin.

Who Can Benefit from Kinesiology Tape?

To make it easy, everyone! While almost everyone can benefit from the therapeutic effect of the tape, a majority of the people that currently use it are athletes. Most professional athletic organizations utilize it, and if you look close enough during some games, you can actually see it on some players! A recent trend has even seen the tape being used on animals, including some of the horses at the Kentucky Derby.

Even though a majority of people using the tape are athletes, it can still be useful for anybody with muscle and joint pain.
